That 30/30 Duntov cam is a decent cam and the 283 was built around it. Just make sure that the intake and exhaust ports are port matched to the intake and headers. It all depends on how much money you have to spend on them. The camel hump heads will be OK but aftermarket heads would be better. As for iron or aluminum really doesn't make a difference at least to me it doesn't. The heads need to have the following: valve springs to match the cam, screw in studs, pushrod guide plates, and possibly roller rockers (I perfer Harland Sharp but that's me). Hopefully the heads have the valve springs to match that 30 30 Duntov cam. I don't think the Vortec heads are going to get it on a 283.Ī good set of heads matched to an good intake with a cam that has a 7000 to 8000 RPM limit is what makes a 283 sing.
